Our main problem in this country is that we are fixated on things that are shiny and which attract the eye. This was an observation of our earliest European visitors and, clearly, we have not changed that much.
The current controversy over a doctor whose actions can only be described as perverted and an actress whose main claim to fame is her ability to arouse the animal in men is par for the course.
What disappoints in this is that – as in an earlier case where a woman, who went willingly to a hotel room with an American soldier only to later complain of a rape to known anti-US groups — the present controversy also came to our attention through our venerable Senate of the Philippines. One has to wonder, is this the work of the Senate – to bring such silly matters to our attention? These are silly considering the sad state that this country is in.
We are unable to provide enough jobs for our people that millions have to leave their families to find any kind of work abroad. While we keep our heads above water from the money these overseas Fiilipino workers (OFW) send their families, there are hardly any new investments even as the richest families wallow in first-world lifestyles. It is so bad that the Chief Justice has taken to making comments on the existence of an oligarchy. Didn’t we hear that before as one man’s reason for declaring himself dictator through a martial law decree?
This country that fixates on controversies rather than facing our very real problems now salivates over sex videos surreptitiously taken by Dr. Hayden Kho through a hidden camera in his own bedroom of himself and — we are told — his 60 or so victims who did not know that their partner for the night was a pervert who takes more pleasure in his secret vice than in the act that he was capturing on his laptop.
These videos are now on the Internet and in stores specializing in selling pirated DVDs.
What drives a competent cosmetic surgeon to record his love-making sessions with different younger women even as he was the lover of a glamorous more successful older cosmetic surgeon – the venerable Vicki Belo? In fact, the sexy starlet Katrina Halili who, showing some cleavage, presented herself to a Senator – also a movie actor who promptly took up the cudgels for her – to complain about how she had been surreptitiously recorded having sex with Dr. Hayden admits that he was at the time Dr. Belo’s lover and she the advertising model of the Belo clinic.
What is perverse in Dr. Hayden Kho is not the fact that he has had over 60 women in his bed; it has to be that he seems to take greater pleasure in recording his performance over the satisfaction that the sex act naturally brings. That these recordings are now out in the open can only mean that the doctor’s perversion has progressed further. The doctor who has also established himself as a singer and an advertising model has destroyed his own image by the revelation that he is not a trustworthy person. How can one trust a doctor with one’s life or cosmetic problem when he apparently secretly records the most secret moments of his and his sexual partners’ secret trysts?
But my main point is not about Hayden’s perversion or the state of his mind.
What the Senate should learn to do is to keep off the shiny baubles that regularly come up from the depths and concentrate on what can be done to move this country forward. Raped girls and women who have been secretly videotaped having sex are matters for the police and the courts. Sadly, we have not elected too many high-minded senators. Thus, the Senate which ought to be looking at more important matters looks like our barangay police precinct.
Why do we even have a Senate? When Rome was in its glory, the Roman Senate was filled with brilliant men who could be depended on to use their wisdom in the service of the State. Thus, having the Roman Senate was like having a coterie of consultants who could lead the Romans out of any problems that they encountered. That was the reason given by Delegate Jesus Paredes (my grandfather) when the 1937 Constitution almost adopted a unicameral parliament, which would have eliminated the Senate. In the United States, the Senate concentrates on State rights while the House handles their voters’ rights. What does our Senate really do, besides butting in on every issue that the media brings up? Is our Senate a mere gathering of dilettantes?
Last Wednesday, the day after she presented herself to the Senate from where Actor- Senator Bong Revilla brought her to the National Bureau of Investigation where she filed a complaint, which was where she should have gone in the first place. Katrina went to the office of the Optical Media Board (OMB) to ask Chairman Edu Manzano to stop the proliferation of her now much in-demand video whose popularity was even boosted further by having her cleavage photo on all the newspapers’ front pages the day before.
Manzano had actually done his job even as Katrina was still crying her eyes out at the Senate and the NBI, The day before she arrived at the OMB, Manzano had already ordered his agents to follow up an earlier tip they had about the brains behind the uploading of the video on the internet, and downloading this for conversion into DVDs.
OMB operatives were even then already looking in the direction of a friend of Dr, Hayden Kho — Erik Johnston Lim Chua, a management engineering graduate who comes from a well-to-do Chinese family, is a resident of Green Hills East and reportedly owns Gigahertz computer stores which has a branch in Quiapo.
Manzano gathered that Chua somehow knew about the existence of Kho’s sex videos and managed to copy them from Kho’s computer’s hard drive, where they were all stored.
It has not been established what prompted Chua to copy the videos or if they had been copied with the express permission of Hayden. What is clear is that Hayden has obviously been telling his close friends about his prurient cache.
Clearly, if anyone profited from the distribution of the Hayden-Katrian video, it would have to be Erik; but, did Hayden also make a bundle from this indiscretion?
In the meantime, Dr. Hayden Kho finally came out with a statement expressing deep regret over the whole incident and announcing that he would suspend his practice of medicine. He also admitted that he has been undergoing professional counseling since December.
Shouldn’t the Senate also look into some counseling for itself?
