The Power of Lechon

“It also became clear to Red Bull International that its exclusive distributor was in the process of stealing its product through imitation. It was formulating its own product to compete against Red Bull.”

by Ducky Paredes

This would be a funny story, if it were not actually happening. Can you believe that the lechon (roasted whole pig) can get a Chinoy group anything it wants from the Department of Justice?

I am incredulous. For one thing, as I age and worry more about my weight and over-all health, I have stopped partaking of lechon except on very special occasions.

Anyway, here’s the tale as told by someone who claims to be an “unimpeachable source”:

A business group led by a wily Chinese-Filipino is using “lechon power” in the Department of Justice to grease his way through cases arising out their shady business deals — like when they double-crossed a respected foreign business group — Red Bull International – which committed the mistake of appointing the group to handle the local distribution of its Red Bull energy products.

This group, led by a Chinoy (Let’s call him “Charlie”.) fooled Red Bull International into granting it exclusive distributorship. This was eventually revoked and canceled because the group failed to meet most of its contractual obligations.

It also became clear to Red Bull International that its exclusive distributor was in the process of stealing its product through imitation. It was formulating its own product to compete against Red Bull.

Imagine this — despite the fact that they failed to do what they promised in the contract, instead of accepting the cancelation of their exclusive distributor status as fair, this unscrupulous gang even had the gall to sue Red Bull and, at the same  time, launch Barako, a direct competitor to Red Bull, whose formulation closely mimics the imported brand.

This Chinoy group was so brazen as to sue Red Bull International after making a fool of the foreign group. It is also demanding an unreasonable amount in exchange for the termination of its distributorship even when it is clear that they were terminated because of their failures and deceptive practices.

How can this country entice investors to come in with their money when local businessmen can so brazenly cheat our investors and get away with it?

Here comes the “lechon” portion. Rumors are  circulating that this local group uses lechon as its “weapon of mass attraction”  in several government offices. Apparently, government bureaucrats are addicted to all kinds of “pork” – barrel or actual. This group led by Charlie is the regular supplier of free lechon to select government officials specially at the Department Of Justice. That’s why the grapevine is abuzz that Charlie is deadlier than typhoons Pepeng and Ondoy put together in the DOJ and other government offices where he operates.

His regular and direct beneficiary of lechon is a high profile prosecutor who acts as if he owns the DOJ.  Is it true that this prosecutor is the godfather of this Charlie?  He is allegedly using all his powers to turn the decision in favor of Charlie in the Red Bull case.

In fact, at one point, the file on the Red Bull case went missing in an effort  to delay any possibility of  an unfavorable decision.

My source says that even the Big J, yes the former Senator Robert Jaworski, wrote the DOJ, to bat for a decision in Charlie’s favor. Imagine Jawo leaving a clear trail of his influence peddling? Could he also be a beneficiary of the endless supply of Charlie lechon?

Obviously, Charlie prodded Jaworski to do the dumbest thing —  write the DOJ to ask for a favorable decision on a case pending before its office.  But such apparently is the power of Charlie’s lechon.

The group even had the gall to run a newspaper ad intended to provide support for the ‘crooked decision’ they have been hatching at the DOJ using lechon power. The ad was intended to frighten the people in DOJ who might be tempted to do the right thing – rule against Charlie.

Fortunately, DOJ officials are not budging and are not threatened for they know they are on the right side of justice. These DOJ officials and personnel who refuse to waver under intense pressure deserve the public’s trust. And at the rate this prosecutor and Jaworski are applying undue influence to the DOJ, the firmer would be the determination of its officials and personnel to do the right thing. Let’s hope they can continue to be upright enough to resist Charlie’s pok.

It is counter-productive for the Catholic bishops to concentrate too much of their attention on Noynoy Aquino’s support for the Reproductive Health Bill. The idea that they can force Noynoy to change his stand on this from threats of non-support from the bishops is only driving more people away from the Church.

Why don’t they just support the candidates who agree with them on this issue, instead of trying to force unwilling candidates to toe their line. I don’t know if any other presidentiables are openly against the RH Bill but, clearly JC de los Reyes, of Ang Kapatiran political party, hews to the Catholic line on everything.

So, why don’t the bishops adopt him as their candidate and do their darndest to push his candidacy. Why concentrate so much on getting Noynoy to change his mind and his held beliefs? Surely, if they do not think that the Kapatiran candidate can win, they can get someone else among the others who is willing to go along with the bishops.

Or, are they concentrating only on Noynoy because they expect that he has the best chance of winning the presidency and that, if they can, early on, convince him to be their willing stooge, how much easier it will be to operate under a Noynoy administration.

But, how much moral value does the endorsement of the bishops have when many of them, including one cardinal, is so openly supportive of the present President who stands accused of so many crimes that it is pointless to begin to enumerate them.

If they can support someone as bad as Gloria, why would they support as pure a soul as Noynoy? Considering who they have been supporting so wholeheartedly, even as her misdeeds are being unearthed, should Noynoy even want their support?
